Next weekend Occupy The Midwest comes to Detroit (Aug 23-26). The interaction with police in Detroit has been remarkably different. Perhaps that is because we’ve been marching with them and speaking dissent regarding City of Detroit administration for months now. Some of our police officers come from families that have personally seen civil rights protest. Detroit is a labor city that the State of Michigan is working through consent of the current administration to bust the unions.
Detroit been desecrated by the banks, by the Mayor’s staff, by City Departments that are giving up, and by the State of Michigan. The Financial Stability Agreement that was drawn up by the same legal counsel that drew up the Emergency Manager Law has removed the people from the interests of its government. That includes the police, fire, EMS, and so much more.
A number of fellow Occupy Detroit members don’t want to get their hands in the politics, saying they want a reboot of the system. I can’t see the steps toward making it happen, so I’ve been working with Free Detroit No Consent to bring the voice of the people into the existing system.
